Fishing

Crystal Lake at Camp Wehinahpay is a Class A private lake so no New Mexico fishing license is required of paid summer camp Scouts and leaders. Summer camp posted fishing hours and catch and release rules must be followed and are strictly enforced. The Scouts that take the Fishing merit badge at camp should talk to their counselor to see how they can fulfill the requirements for their merit badge. Scouts and leaders are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear due to limited supplies at camp.

Visitors must purchase a Wehinahpay fishing permit at the camp office upon check in. All visitors must adhere to the same rules and regulations concerning fishing hours and catch and release. Anyone who fishes must use barbless hooks.

MOUNTAIN MAN RENDEZVOUS

The Camp Wehinahpay Mountain Man Camp is open for troops to visit. This is a fantastic program built away from the main camp and as close as possible to how the real mountain man lived.

You can take part in a wild obstacle course; two-man buck saw contest, black powder rifle shooting, tomahawk throwing, forging and spear throwing. Scouts are not the only people to visit the Mountain Man area. Indians often show up to trade with the residents of the cabin and will join in a feast of home cooking over open flames.

The Mountain Man didn’t only like to trade furs, but stories as well. In the evening around the campfire, the Mountain Men and Indians will spin tales of the area and talk about the history of the Mountain Man and local Indian tribes, until the Scouts are ready to go home.

Your SPL makes the reservation for this program at the first SPL Meeting on Sunday at 4:30pm. So keep this exciting program area in mind.

MOUNTAIN BIKE ADVENTURES

We will conduct a morning and afternoon Mountain Bike program for all ages and sizes. There will be a limit for each session. Our objective in this program is for mountain bike enthusiasts, or those who are new at mountain biking, to have a chance to experience one of the fastest growing forms of outdoor recreation. Our goal is to give you an educational yet fun program emphasizing safety and respect for our environmental surroundings.

CHUCK WAGON CHOW DOWN

New in 2001, Chuck wagon cooking can be one of the most exciting meals you and your Troop can ever have. True outdoor cooking at a real chuck wagon is a great way to teach your Scouts about teamwork and cooperation. With assistance from a trained Camp staff member, you and your troop will prepare the food, cook it on a real fire and even better, have the opportunity to chow down with your Scouts. This activity will require prior sign-up when you check in. Don’t wait, this activity will fill up quickly!

BACKPACKING ADVENTURES

New for 2002, we will offer a Backpacking program! One overnight trip is currently being planned as well as an all day trip. We will supply everything needed except for your canteen! Be prepared for some fun!
